Customs inspects 83 suspected unsafe portable UV sterilizers, urges citizens to be careful of eye and skin injury

As the epidemic in Hong Kong continues, many citizens will buy portable UV sterilizers.

The Customs announced today (17th) that it had seized 3 models of 83 portable UV sterilizers suspected to be unsafe on the market earlier.

The customs reminds citizens that they should pay more attention to safety when using such products. Long-term or high-dose exposure to the short-wave ultraviolet (UVC) emitted by the sterilizer may be potentially dangerous and damage the eyes and skin.

Hong Kong Customs earlier seized 3 models of 83 portable UV sterilizers suspected of being unsafe.

The Customs had earlier received referrals from relevant agencies that the six portable ultraviolet sterilizers sold on the market may have the risk of emitting excessive ultraviolet radiation.

Customs officers then patrolled in various districts and successfully trial-purchased two of the products for testing.

After preliminary investigation, the customs suspected that the relevant products did not comply with the general safety requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Ordinance, so they took action and seized the two products from a retail store in Tsim Sha Tsui and another retailer’s office in Kwun Tong A total of 70 pieces, suspected to be unsafe portable ultraviolet sterilizers.

During the operation, the customs also found another 13 pieces of suspected unsafe portable ultraviolet sterilizers referred by relevant agencies in the aforementioned offices.

No other products involved in the case were sold

In addition to searching the retailer involved, customs officers also patrolled all districts in Hong Kong, and temporarily did not find the three products on sale.

The case is still under investigation.

According to the "Regulations", no person is allowed to supply, manufacture or import consumer products unless they comply with the general safety requirements of the "Regulations".

Offenders can be fined up to 100,000 yuan and 1 year in jail for the first conviction, and can be fined up to 500,000 yuan and 2 years in jail for each subsequent conviction.

The Consumer Council pointed out that even though UVC has the ability to sterilize and disinfect, in daily life, the actual effectiveness of UVC disinfection depends on many factors.
