The plenary session of the National Electoral Council of Ecuador, convened in an extraordinary session on Tuesday night, failed to approve the legal report for the vote count of the presidential elections on February 7 that could settle the dispute between the candidates Guillermo Lasso (CREO) and Yaku Pérez (Pachacutik) for the passage to the second electoral round.

  • Lasso leads (narrowly) to Pérez in the face of the second round in Ecuador

Both candidates maintain a narrow difference in votes that places Lasso above Pérez.

For his part, the candidate of Correísmo Andrés Arauz has already secured his place in the second round, as his difference in votes is significantly greater.

The majority of the body's advisers did not support the report despite the fact that President Diana Atamaint insisted that it was necessary to defend the transparency of the elections because "there is nothing to hide."

Last Friday, the candidates Lasso and Pérez reached an agreement, in the presence of the CNE authorities and international observers, to achieve a 100% vote count in the Guayas province and 50% of the vote in 16 additional provinces.

  • Yaku Pérez, the indigenous leader who became the surprise contender in Ecuador's presidential elections

However, in recent days, both candidates expressed their disagreements and differences with the procedure and left the possibility of a review of the vote in the hands of the CNE.

The candidates will be able to appeal the CNE's decision that could announce results of the first round in the coming days.
