The Prime Minister refused, in front of the senators, this proposal made by the Defender of Rights, Claire Hédon.

It is a firm and "

solemn

"

refusal

.

Asked during questions to the Senate government on the creation of zones without identity checks, Prime Minister Jean Castex rejected this possibility.

On February 12, the Defender of Rights Claire Hédon had proposed to experiment with “

no-check zones

”, affirming that “

in 95% of cases, identity checks do nothing

”.

The Defender of Rights (...) is an independent administrative authority which formulates a number of recommendations.

It turns out that the government of the Republic is also independent of the Defender of Rights

”, first insisted the head of government, Jean Castex.

Before declaring, to the applause of the senators: "

I solemnly say before the Senate and before the country that there are not and that there will be no zones without identity checks in application of the laws of the Republic.

Claire Hédon's proposal, concomitant with the attack on police officers in Poissy, quickly triggered the ire of police unions and the rejection of members of the government.

The Keeper of the Seals, Eric Dupond-Moretti, swept this hypothesis, preferring the use of the "

camera-pedestrian

".

On Tuesday, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin in turn refuted on RTL such an experiment.

"

I do not think that there must be places in France where the police do not have the right to control

", he affirmed, recalling his role of "

defender of the police officers and the gendarmes, and ultimately defender of the French

”.
