Gunmen have abducted hundreds of students from a government educational institution in western Nigeria, security and government officials said today (Wednesday).

According to sources, the gunmen, apparently members of criminal gangs operating in the area, were wearing military uniforms when they stormed the Scientific College in Kagara in Niger province.

Some students have reportedly managed to escape at the time of the crime, and the Nigerian Air Force is working to locate the hostages.

The attack took place around 2:00 a.m., and it happened about two months after about 350 boys were abducted from a high school in the northwest of the country.

The boys were released by security forces.

However, about 100 of the 270 girls abducted by Boko Haram from the town of Chibuk in 2014 are still in captivity.

The recent mass abduction has fueled growing criticism of President Muhammadu Bohari, who replaced the military leadership last month after a wave of violence by Islamic terrorist organizations and armed gangs.

The president today condemned the raid, and sent the heads of the defense establishment to coordinate the operations to rescue the hostages.

Violence and insecurity further complicate the economic crisis in the most populous country in Africa, which is struggling to cope with the drop in its revenues due to falling oil prices, in addition to the corona plague.
