“An exciting combination”: Richard Strauss Days become a journey of discovery

Three Strauss premieres, a first version and the new interpretation of Beethoven's 4th Symphony - these are real treasures that can be heard at the Richard Strauss Days.

In addition, the program focuses on nature.

  • Advance sales for the Richard Strauss Days got off to a very good start.

There are fewer tickets available due to Corona.

  • Camerata Salzburg rehearses pieces especially for Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

  • World premieres of songs and orchestral works are on the program.

That is why there is also an artist talk at the Richard Strauss Days, which has been going on since the beginning of the series.

This year Julian Prégardien will be available to answer questions.

The tenor is sure to chat about the recital during which he sings works by Strauss, Ludwig van Beethoven and Yrjö Kilpinen, a Finnish contemporary of the Garmischer by choice.

“An exciting combination,” says the head of the Strauss Institute, who took over responsibility for the program in July 2020 after leaving Alexander Liebreich.

He had three weeks to develop a new concept after the resignation of the artistic director.

And to convince the local council.

That was a success, which is why Strauss Days will take place from June 24th to 27th.

Smaller and more modest than the festival before, but the program is no less appealing.

According to Sedivy, the assignment was “Out into the country”.

In doing so, he takes up the approach that Liebreich had also followed.

He opened up the festival to the outside world, incorporated impressive nature - and established the music hikes.

The head of the institute is also sticking to these.

The trumpet-playing mountain guide Alois Lösl takes his guests on two tours - to the Werdenfels castle ruins and the Partnach Gorge.

Sedivy does not expect any problems with possible corona rules at these events, each with 30 people.

It could get more complicated for the concerts in the Richard Strauss Hall and the Werdenfels Festival Hall.

200 cards are currently available for the various dates.

“We're very careful.” Sedivy compares the seating in times of pandemics with a puzzle game.

For example, if a couple goes to a concert, their chairs can stand next to each other.

Otherwise it is important to adhere to the distance rules.

As a result, everything is queried at ticket sales, which got off to a very good start, in order to be able to act efficiently.

Symphony concert will be broadcast in the Michael-Ende-Kurpark

A symphony concert with the Camerata Salzburg on Saturday, June 26th, will be projected into the Michael-Ende-Kurpark against this background, so that visitors to the White Night - dressed in white - can experience it free of charge.

This is also a step outside to open up Strauss and his music to many.

The ensemble from Salzburg is rehearsing Ludwig van Beethoven's 4th Symphony especially for Garmisch.

“Of course you know the plant very well,” says Sedivy.

After a version that the composer has set up is played at the Strauss-Tage, you have to rehearse it first.

Strauss was discovered at the age of 21 by Hans von Bülow, who then found him a first conductor position in Meiningen.

"He was able to learn the craft from him and witness the rehearsals of all Beethoven symphonies," says the director of the institute.

Strauss took the scores and wrote them down in detail, as von Bülow saw the interplay, the phrasing and the tempos.

"He has appropriated that, made it more concrete over the years and even copied it again." He left such an impressive document in red ink for posterity.

Petra Lang sings two song premieres

These are discoveries that Sedivy shares with his audience.

The world premiere of two songs is also one of them.

The mezzo-soprano Petra Lang will present them, accompanied by Adrian Baianu on the piano.

The Camerata may present another world premiere.

“A youth work,” explains Sedivy.

Strauss dedicated the Concert Overture in B minor "to dear papa for the celebration of his name".

The first version of his sonata for violoncello and piano in F major, which Raphaela Gromes will play accompanied by Julian Riem on the first evening of the Strauss Days, has already been performed once, but not yet in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

“A specialty,” says Sedivy.

This differs massively from the known second version.

The composer rewrote entire passages and created "an almost completely new work".

It is a pleasure for Sedivy to surprise the public with such treasures.

“A great thing.” He builds on this and on the combination with nature, which also inspired Strauss.
