Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann presented the traffic accident statistics.

The number of road traffic accidents decreased significantly due to the 2020 corona pandemic.

  • The number of road deaths fell to a historic low.

  • There was also a positive trend in accidents with trucks and children.

  • The interior minister is only concerned about two-wheelers.

Munich

- Two lockdowns, travel bans and home office last year meant that there was less going on on Bavaria's streets.

This was also reflected in the traffic accident statistics of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, which Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU *) presented on Thursday in Munich.

Both accidents and accident victims have declined.

However, the numbers have increased with two modes of transport.

Traffic accident statistics: traffic deaths at the lowest level since records began

The Bavarian Police recorded a total of 345,411 traffic accidents in 2020.

That is over 70,000 fewer than in 2019. Expressed as a percentage, the number of accidents fell by 17.1 percent.

This was probably mainly due to the lower volume of traffic due to the corona pandemic *.

The number of road deaths also fell.

484 people lost their lives on Bavaria's streets last year.

"This is the lowest number of road deaths since the accident records began more than 65 years ago," said Interior Minister Herrmann.

The number of truck accidents has also decreased.

It fell by 19.1 percent to 14,127.

And even if it has become a hated word for many teachers, parents and students - thanks to distance teaching due to the corona pandemic *, accidents on the way to school fell by 36.7 percent to 411.

Overall, 10.3 percent fewer children were injured in road traffic.

Traffic accident statistics: cyclists and motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in accidents

However, the number of cycling accidents increased last year.

“Due to the pandemic, more cyclists were on the road last year.

Unfortunately, the number of bicycle accidents rose by 9.6 percent to 19,212 and the number of injured cyclists by 11.1 percent to 18,006 ”, Herrmann continued.

Positive - the number of fatal bicycle accidents has decreased.

It fell by 11.7 percent to 68.

The interior minister announced that he would like to continue working to make cycling even safer.

"This also includes increased controls - especially of bike rowdies, but also of drivers who do not show any consideration for cyclists."

There was also an increase in accidents among motorcyclists.

"Despite the corona pandemic * and many police and road construction measures, we have an increase of 7.8 percent to 125 (2019: 116)," said Herrmann.

127 motorcyclists died.

An increase of 11.4 percent.

"Around every fourth road user killed was on a motorcycle," explained the Interior Minister.

"That is more than questionable!"

Traffic accident statistics: The most common reason for accidents was excessive speed

The main cause of traffic accidents was again excessive speed.

According to Herrmann, speeders apparently cannot be slowed down by the corona pandemic, on the contrary: in 2020, excessively high and inappropriate speeds were the cause of 143 and thus around 31% of all fatal traffic accidents (2019: 136).

The number of people killed rose by six to 147 compared to the previous year (2019: 141).

97, i.e. almost two thirds of the casualties, died in accidents on country roads due to excessive speed despite the overall lower volume of traffic.

"Speeding too high is still the main cause of fatal traffic accidents", summarized Herrmann.

The Bavarian police will therefore control even more speed limits this year, announced the interior minister.

In connection with speed violations, officials issued 320,032 reports and issued 693,154 warnings last year.
