Following the storm: an unusual pollution of tar on beaches

Following the stormy days, an unusual contamination of lumps of viscous tar reached the shores of the country yesterday.

According to the layout of the beaches where they were discovered, which did not include Haifa Bay, it appears that they came from the south and from a great distance.

The source of the tar flakes is probably from a tanker, but the chance of locating those responsible is nil and there is no known vessel in the Mediterranean that reported a malfunction.

The initial discovery was at Habonim Beach followed by Maagan Michael, but later it became clear that this was just the beginning of the largest pollution incident of its kind in the last decade, and tar was seen from Betzet Beach in the north to the shores of Rishon Lezion.

According to initial estimates, these are tens of cubic meters of tar, whose cleaning operations will last several days at an estimated cost of hundreds of thousands of shekels.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has given the event the nickname "Tar in the Storm", but the intensive cleaning operations will actually only begin with the calming of the storm due to the weather conditions.

According to the type of tar and texture, it is currently estimated that this is an emission of oils or oil from a vessel that passed off the coast of Israel.

Simultaneously with the pollution, a 17-foot-tall whale was ejected onto the beach in the southern Nitzanim Reserve.

The Director General of the Nature and Parks Authority, Shaul Goldstein, said that there may be a connection between the emissions and the lumps of tar. According to Goldstein,

We call on the Ministry of Environmental Protection to investigate the incident and find the culprits and punish them severely. "

Dr. Aviad Sheinin, of the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station and the Delphis Association, said that “this is a relatively rare event, the last documentation was in 2016.

Young individuals usually come to our area.

In this case, too, it is a young individual, in the Mediterranean they reach 20 meters in adulthood and in the oceans reach 24 meters.

It is the second largest animal after the blue whale in the world, they are common in the western Mediterranean but rare in the eastern basin. "
