The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria, who is not studying the developments of the situation in Syria.

According to a statement by the Ministry today, during the meeting, it was emphasized that there is no alternative to a political solution to the crisis in Syria within the framework of a process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves on the basis of respecting Syria's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The statement pointed out that there was an exchange of views on the humanitarian situation in Syria, with an emphasis on the need to mobilize comprehensive assistance to Syrians throughout the country without discrimination, politicization and preconditions, which would contribute to the voluntary and dignified return of refugees, displaced persons and internally displaced persons.

The Russian side expressed its support for the United Nations Secretary-General's call to reduce unilateral coercive measures against the background of the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, which were imposed by exceeding the powers of the UN Security Council, including against Syria.

The statement pointed out that the two sides discussed in detail a full range of issues, including the situation in Syria and the tasks of providing comprehensive humanitarian assistance and assessing the social and economic situation there.

The statement added, "Special attention was given to the work of the Constitution Debate Committee, which held its fifth meeting at the end of last January in Geneva. The results of the fifteenth international meeting on Syria in the Astana format, which was held on February 16 and 17 in Sochi, were considered."

In the closing statement of the 15th international meeting in Astana format, the guarantor countries renewed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the Syrian territories and the continuation of cooperation until the elimination of terrorist organizations there.
