After the State Administration of Radio and Television of China announced on the 12th of this month to block the BBC World Service (BBC World Service), Radio Hong Kong decided on the same day to stop broadcasting "BBC International Channel" and "BBC Current Affairs Week" from late on the 12th. .

In response to the concerns of employees at an internal meeting this morning (18th), Director of Broadcasting, Leung Ka Wing, pointed out that he had made the decision to stop broadcasting and there was no pressure from high-level government.

The Radio Television Hong Kong Program Producers Union questioned that Liang Jiarong's decision was overreaction.

RTHK News reported that Liang Jiarong revealed at the meeting that the reason for the suspension of broadcasting was based on the fact that the decision of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television to stop broadcasting applies to the whole country. Hong Kong belongs to China, and Radio Hong Kong is also a government department.

Liang Jiarong also reiterated at the meeting that the decision has nothing to do with the handling of news editing.

The Radio Television Hong Kong Program Producers Union questioned that Leung Ka-wing's decision this time was an overreaction and worried that it would become a precedent.

The union stated that under "One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong has not seen Hong Kong follow the SARFT's decision in the past, and this decision also reduced the public's access to international information.

The union believes that RTHK’s mission includes “reporting local, national and international events and issues in a timely and balanced manner” and “providing programs that promote Hong Kong’s diverse and open culture”, and questioned the decision to violate the spirit of the “RTHK Charter” .

Regarding Liang Jiarong only responding to the incident in internal meetings, instead of explaining it to the public, the union feels regret and puzzled.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television earlier stated that the relevant content of the BBC World News’ China-related reports seriously violated the relevant provisions of the "Regulations on the Administration of Radio and Television" and the "Measures for the Administration of the Landing of Overseas Satellite TV Channels", violated the requirements that news should be true and fair, and harmed China’s national interests. Undermining China's national unity, it did not meet the requirements for overseas channels to land in China, so it ordered a ban on broadcasting, and its application for landing in the new year will not be accepted.

The BBC later issued a statement denying China’s accusation of “creating fake news and containing biased ideology”, stressing that it is an impartial and most trusted international news organization in the world, and condemning the decision of Hong Kong and Taiwan to stop broadcasting. The company's reporters in Mainland China and Hong Kong are like colleagues from all over the world, reporting the news fairly and honestly.
