The tax filing season has begun in the United States.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is asking taxpayers to complete this process electronically, in order to expedite the refund in less than 21 days.

If done on paper and by regular mail, the process could take longer.

Using the direct deposit service to the bank also helps expedite the delivery of the refund, since the IRS can make the deposit directly through an electronic transfer to the taxpayer's financial institution.

According to Carlos Lovera, an accountant in Virginia, the taxpayer could get the refund or money from the stimulus package in two to three weeks.

“It is definitely faster and safer if it is done online and the information goes directly to their database;

Unlike if it is done on paper, it may take longer, as a person receives the forms and has to digitize the data, and there may be errors, ”said Lovera.

“The pandemic created a variety of changes in tax laws, as well as some unique circumstances for this tax season.

To avoid problems, the IRS urges taxpayers to take a few simple steps to help ensure they get their refund as quickly as possible, ”IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a press release.

Lovera recommends that the 2020 tax return be processed as soon as possible, even if the deadline is April 15.

"If during 2020 the person lost his job or something happened to him due to COVID, then he could claim benefits, including money from stimulus packages that have already been granted," he added.

During 2020, some Americans received attendance checks as part of stimulus packages approved by Congress.

The amount was based on the taxpayer's 2019 or 2018 tax return, as the IRS had the latest information on the tax return.

It is estimated that if another stimulus package is approved, the taxpayer could receive benefits in a week, Lovera said, based on the time other benefits were received.

In addition, the IRS will have the taxpayer information electronically if the return was filed online.
