The Education Bureau announced earlier that it has formulated an improvement plan for the core subject curriculum and assessment of high schools. It is expected that it will be implemented as early as the fourth grade of the new school year in September 2021.

The Education Bureau today (19th) held the first "Briefing Session on Optimizing Chinese Language in Senior High Schools" to explain the details of the improvement plan to high school teachers.

A Chinese language teacher who participated in the briefing revealed that the bureau stated that the current textbooks could be used in the Chinese language in the future, but the weighting of scores for assessment and school-based assessment is expected to be released from May to June this year at the earliest.

It is known that the new part of the Chinese essay will be closer to life than the current comprehensive paper, and there will be a limit on the number of words to prevent candidates from "getting longer and longer to achieve high scores."

Extend Paper 2 by 45 minutes and add "Practical Writing" part

The Education Bureau’s first "Briefing Session on Enhancement of Chinese Language in Senior Secondary Schools" was held online this afternoon, and 400 places were already full.

Participating teachers described the briefing as making teachers "clear about their ideas, but the weight of (evaluation) is not clear." The two-hour briefing session will be conducted by a representative of the Education Bureau to explain the future curriculum framework, including adjustments to compulsory and elective parts, and reorganization of open examination paper , And provide adjustment arrangements for non-Chinese speaking students; the next hour is a teacher’s questioning session.

The improvement plan announced by the Education Bureau earlier suggested that the Chinese Diploma Examination will be reduced from the current four papers to two, and only the reading of Paper 1 and the writing of Paper 2 will be retained. Paper 2 will extend the examination time by 45 minutes and add "Practical Writing" part.

It is known that the newly added "Practical Writing" part will be close to the theme of life, with the upper limit of 500 to 550 words. "The propositional writing will be retained, but only a single writing task will be completed in the future. I believe it will be easier."

As for setting a limit on the number of words, some teachers estimate that the bureau wants to avoid the vicious circle of "many candidates getting longer and longer in order to get high scores".

Teachers urge to announce the weights of each paper and different parts as soon as possible

The teacher believes that although the Chinese subject reform is "not as complicated as general studies," it emphasizes the importance of assessments and school-based assessment arrangements for teaching. He criticized the Education Bureau for not publishing the details of the diploma examination papers and the grading proportions of different parts. It also did not provide sample test questions for reference, making it difficult for teachers to make adjustments. "The weight of the entire curriculum is not available, and the total score of the school-based assessment is unknown. It feels that the Education Bureau ideally wants teachers to delete some of them and keep them. Self-adjustment will make sense. Part of it will be integrated into the future curriculum, but understand that teachers need time to think about how to adjust."
