An 8-year-old boy drowned in the Rio Grande, or Rio Bravo, when he tried to cross with his family from Mexico to the United States, according to the Mexican Ministry of the Interior in a statement.

Members of the National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM) found the body of the minor this Wednesday, the statement said.

They found him in the Piedras Negras area, Coahuila, according to authorities.

The Ministry of the Interior pointed out that the parents and a younger sister of the victim, detained by the US Border Patrol when crossing the river, were returned to Mexican soil at the request of the officials of this country for the recognition of the child .

The minor was with several adults on a small island in the middle of the river, but could not stay safe from the current of water that trapped him, explained the INM.

Mexican authorities added that a representation from the Consulate of Honduras in Coahuila helps the family with the pertinent steps for the repatriation of the remains.
