The nuclear deal with Iran threatens to overturn. International talks and a concession from the US government should save the important treaty.

The nuclear deal with Iran threatens to overturn.

International talks and a concession from the US government should save the important treaty.

Tehran - An international crisis is currently developing around the nuclear deal with Iran.

The reason for this is Iran's threat to no longer comply with the nuclear deal.

Iran

informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) the week that from next Tuesday (February 23, 2021) he will no longer implement the voluntary transparency measures from the nuclear agreement.

In addition, the leadership in Tehran has announced that it will no longer allow IAEA inspectors to make short-term visits and that the so-called additional protocol is therefore ineffective.

As a consequence of this change of course, the IAEA will in all likelihood have access to fewer nuclear facilities and will no longer be able to carry out reliable controls.

A lack of unlimited access undermines the nuclear deal and essentially makes it ineffective.

Nuclear deal with Iran: Angela Merkel worried

In response to this approach by the leadership in Tehran, Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) traveled to Paris on Thursday (February 18) for talks with France and Great Britain on Iran.

An exchange with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken then took place.

After their deliberations, Blinken and the three European foreign ministers called for Iran

to meet its obligations under the agreement again.

On Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) was concerned about the government's actions in Tehran in a phone call with Iranian President Hassan Ruhani

voiced.

She emphasized that the federal government and other partner states of the international nuclear agreement are very interested in receiving the treaty.

Nuclear dispute with the US: hoped for a turnaround with the new US government

The reason for this development is the nuclear dispute and the tense relationship between the USA and Iran.

The government in Tehran had set a deadline for incumbent US President Joe Biden.

Biden should withdraw the sanctions imposed on Iran by his predecessor Donald Trump by next week.

On the other hand, Iran will take further steps to violate the guidelines of the nuclear agreement.

Iranian President Hassan Ruhani seems to be hoping for the US to change course under President Joe Biden to save both the nuclear deal and his country from economic collapse.

For this, from Ruhani’s point of view, the USA would have to take the first step and propose negotiations.

Iran nuclear deal: Joe Biden seeks negotiations

Joe Biden's government has signaled readiness for new negotiations under certain conditions.

Tehran must again adhere to all the terms of the agreement.

A return to the 2015 agreement should also only be the preliminary stage to a more far-reaching and stronger agreement.

The US government announced on Thursday that it would hold a meeting at the invitation of the EU with Iran

and the other signatory states to the 2015 nuclear deal.

It was also announced that restrictions on the freedom of movement of Iranian diplomats working at the UN would be relaxed.

The background: the 2015 nuclear deal as a historic breakthrough

The 2015 nuclear deal, once hailed as a breakthrough, was intended to deter Iran from building an atomic bomb.

After the US under Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in May 2018, Iran has also gradually ignored all requirements since May 2019.

Trump wanted to use tough sanctions to get the Islamic Republic to accept an agreement with tougher conditions.

The previous sanctions already led to the worst economic crisis in Iran's history.
