Biden: We will not remove sanctions on Iran until you stop enriching uranium (from Twitter)

US President Joe Biden will today (Friday) call on world democracies and his European allies to work together against the challenges posed by China, but will make it clear that he is not interested in a "new cold war", a senior administration official told Reuters.

With regard to Iran, Biden is expected to say that the United States is interested in renewing diplomacy with it, after its predecessor Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal and imposed new sanctions on it.

Biden will attend a virtual gathering of G7 leaders today and will speak at the annual Munich Security Conference.

The Democratic president, who was sworn in less than a month ago, will take advantage of his "virtual visit" to Europe to re-establish the United States' status as a group player in the international arena, following four years of President Trump's nationalist "America First" policy.

Israel, according to reports in the United States, has been informed in advance of Washington's intention to renew diplomatic contacts with Iran.

However, Biden did not mention this to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when the two first spoke on Wednesday.

Throughout the election campaign, the President of the United States did not hide his desire to return to the nuclear agreement, which was signed in 2015 while he was Barack Obama's deputy.

However, he insists that Tehran must cease its violations and re-abide by the agreement in full.

Iran began violating in 2019 the agreement aimed at restricting its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, in response to sanctions by the Trump administration and in an attempt to put pressure on the EU, Russia and China that are still part of the deal.

Tonight, Washington announced a series of gestures aimed at rebuilding trust with Tehran, such as lifting restrictions on Iranian diplomats in the UN delegation to New York and a reservation on the previous administration's decision to return all international sanctions on it. Removed in the UN Security Council resolution to ratify the nuclear deal.

That determination had no real effect in practice, because an absolute majority of the countries in the world claimed that the United States no longer had the authority to operate the snapback mechanism after it withdrew from the agreement.

Despite these steps, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed that Tehran has not moved its position.

He said Iran would "immediately" cancel all steps it took in violation of its commitments to the nuclear deal - only after the sanctions were lifted.

"Then we will immediately reverse all response steps. Very simple," tweeted Zarif, who accuses the current administration of continuing Trump's "maximum pressure" policy, which he says is failing.

A Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman sent a similar message today, tweeting: "The United States must act: remove sanctions. We will respond."

Iran's next move is set to begin this coming Tuesday, and it will be the most dramatic to date - a halt to the surprise visits of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The United States, Britain, France and Germany urge Iran to refrain from doing so, and have expressed concern over the recent moves by the Islamic Republic to produce enriched uranium to 20% and paint metallic uranium.
