The United States on Friday (February 19) called on the military junta in Burma not to use violence and to relinquish power after the death of a female protester, the first since the coup of February 1.

Mya Thwate Thwate Khaing was shot in the head on February 9 during a demonstration against the coup in Naypyidaw, the administrative capital of Burma.
The 20-year-old protester died on Friday.

Mya Thwate Thwate Khaing quickly became a symbol of resistance for protesters demanding the release of former civilian government chief Aung San Suu Kyi, the end of the dictatorship, and the repeal of the 2008 constitution, which was too favorable to the army.
The United States has repeatedly denounced the indictment of the Nobel Peace Prize and demanded his release.
