Some surfers claimed that soaking the wooden spoon in boiling water removes the natural oils of the wood that protect it from bacteria and may even distort the spoon.

Instead, they suggested a variety of other ways to clean -

How to clean wooden spoons

  • It is best to rinse them with warm water immediately after use.

  • It is not advisable to soak the spoon in water with dish soap, as this may cause the spread of bacteria that will be absorbed into the wood.

  • Soaking can also cause the wood to split or crack.

But fortunately there are some easy solutions on hand to keep your wooden paws clean.

Salt

- When cleaning wooden dishes, using warm soapy water can help wash away bacteria, however, it is also recommended to pour a good amount of coarse salt on the wooden spoon.

You can then transfer a sliced lemon to the surface until the salt is completely dissolved.

The lemon is supposed to help remove the odors and the combination of the two is supposed to eliminate the dirt.

Then, rinse the wooden spoon with cold water and leave to dry in the sun if possible.

Baking soda

is another effective means of removing stains and odors from wooden surfaces.

To use it for cleaning just sprinkle it on the wooden items and then sprinkle some lemon juice on top.

Then use a clean cloth to scrub the stained area before rinsing the cleaning solution with water and leaving to dry in the sun.

White vinegar

- To clean and disinfect wooden spoons using water and vinegar all you have to do is fill a spray bottle with a mixture of water and vinegar.

Place the wooden items on a paper towel and then spray them with the vinegar cleaning solution you made.

Let the solution work for a few minutes then rinse with warm water and let the dishes dry in the sun.

Bleach

- For removing stubborn stains and odors, you can also soak wooden spoons in a very diluted bleach solution.

In a bath, sink or large bowl mix hot water and bleach in a ratio of 1:20 bleach to water.

Put the wooden spoons in the solution and soak for a few minutes.

Rinse everything well in warm water then soak in clean hot water for a few minutes to remove any remaining bleach left.

Dry the spoon with a towel and then let it air dry.

Please note - bleach should only be used as a last resort as it is a toxic substance if not used properly and it can also damage wooden items.

Sandpaper

- If all other methods have been found to be ineffective in removing odors and stains, sandpaper can be used to remove a layer of wood from the spoon.

This method will allow you to get rid of any residue left over from previous uses and get a smooth and clean wooden vessel - of course the spoon should be rinsed thoroughly afterwards with warm water.

This method is not recommended for forcing by hand or in wood siding.
