The appearance of US President Joe Biden at the Munich Security Conference, one of the most important annual international meetings held this year due to the Corona plague in a digital and abbreviated manner, was historic. This is the first time a US president has addressed a conference since its inception in the 1980s.

Biden was a regular guest of the conference in its previous incarnations, and this time, for the first time as president of the leading superpower in the West, he took advantage of his appearance to announce the return of the

60th century to serve as an arena for exchange of views between statesmen, politicians, military and academics

USA to the modus operandi (method of operation) of full cooperation with its European partners.

Biden detailed the list of threats and challenges facing the West in the following order: the danger to the democratic order, China's intensification, Russia's provocations, the Corona plague, the climate crisis and the nuclear arms race.

In this context, Biden also briefly addressed Iran, emphasizing two points: First, the United States is ready to resume negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.

That is, it is not a return to an agreement that has become irrelevant due to Iranian violations, but rather negotiations with other powers joining the old agreement with Iran on an updated agreement to the new reality. And

a second point: the activity undermines Iran's stability across the Middle East. Intends to deal with it in coordination with its European allies and "other partners."

A change of attitude has already been announced by the Biden government over the Yemeni civil war - removing the Houthis, Iran's allies from the list of terrorist organizations, and stopping the supply of weapons to traditional US allies. In this confrontation - more indicative of a desire to please Tehran and its regional expansion aspirations.

Here we already clearly see a gap between the declared position of the new US administration and its actions on the ground, a gap that may intensify with the expected resumption of contacts with Iran regarding the nuclear program.

The Obama administration, which had many partners in the current administration, saw the rapprochement with Iran as a key goal for a strategic change in the US alliance in the Middle East at the expense of Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Therefore, the previous Democratic government hid from Israel, but also from Europeans. The secret channel of dialogue with Tehran, which paved the way for the terrible nuclear deal, Obama, in his run towards Iran, bypassed the Europeans and forced them to run after him and give up fateful issues, which were not included in the agreement.

Did the Europeans learn a lesson from this experience?

Although in the face of Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Paris, Berlin and London acted to preserve what was possible under the crumbling agreement, today different and more forceful chants are heard from the three European capitals.

Europe will have to become the responsible adult

The speech of French President Emmanuel Macron at the Munich Security Conference can provide an explanation for this: Europeans understand that the Biden administration will turn most of its attention to what is happening in the Pacific, that is, to deal with the growing Chinese threat.

This is why the Middle East has lost its centrality in Washington's agenda.

In such a state of affairs, Europe will have to take greater responsibility for dealing with the security problems of the Middle East, which poses a direct threat to it.

While Biden and his administration are engaged in a fateful courtship of Iran, thinking that in this way they could reassure a very problematic front for them, the Europeans will have to become the responsible adult to block another perforated American deal with the Iranians - at a time when Iran is very close to a nuclear bomb.

Democratic governance has allowed North Korea to become a nuclear power, and democratic governance may also allow Iran to reach that status.

Europe will have to restrain this development as much as it can, as a nuclear Iran will cause significant tectonic shocks throughout the Middle East that will affect Europe itself.

Will Europe be able to withstand an American administration that seems determined to adopt a conciliatory policy toward Tehran?

Europe today is very weak economically: Britain is no longer a member of the European Union and pursues its own foreign policy, Germany is facing a change of leadership in the coming year and Macron's internal status is highly questionable.

And yet, precisely all of these weaknesses can produce a determined European front to deal with the Iranian nuclear threat.

For, any further storm in the Middle East could drown Europe.

The Iranian danger should be perceived in European capitals as an existential threat to them.
