This interview comes 48 hours after a keynote speech by the Algerian head of state who called for early elections and pardoned Hirak detainees, on the eve of the second anniversary of this popular uprising.

During their previous telephone conversation, on January 24, Mr. Macron had affirmed "

his desire to work together again on issues of common interest

".

Among the priority issues between the two shores of the Mediterranean is the thorny question of the “reconciliation of antagonistic memories” on French colonization and the war of independence (1954-1962).

The Algerian president has not publicly reacted to the publication a month ago of the report commissioned by Emmanuel Macron from French historian Benjamin Stora on the subject.
