The Mexican women's team had been denied playing at the mythical Azteca stadium since 2007. In that year there was no women's league.

Monica Vergara, the current coach, was even still playing.

It has been 14 years for the Mexican Soccer Federation to give in to the

boom

in women's soccer.

This Saturday, the venue that has seen legends such as Pelé and Maradona rise to the top has seen the Mexicans triumph 3-0 against the Costa Ricans, in a friendly match.

The pandemic thwarted the opportunity for the stands to respond to the return of the Mexican women's team to Azteca.

And yet, the two main television stations (Televisa and TV Azteca) in the country broadcast the game with a similar importance to the men's team.

It was not for less: it was the debut of the first coach of the absolute team of Mexico.

Monica Vergara, 37, is the Tri's first coach in more than half a century.

Vergara managed, in 2018, that a team of players under the age of 17 reached a World Cup final against Spain.

Despite losing the big game, it was the biggest milestone in women's football in Mexico.

Confidence settled on Vergara and it was in early January 2021 when they gave him control of the senior team.

In the match against Costa Rica, and thanks to the silence of the stadium, the voice of a Monica Vergara was heard, a coach whose great teacher was the world champion, the American Jill Ellis.

Their players enjoyed the game.

At minute 22, an accurate header from Rebeca Bernal, a tough central defender, put the score 1-0.

And before the first half was over, the agile Katty Martinez scored a colossal goal by hanging the ball into the goal for 2-0.

Stephany Mayor, the captain, scored the third goal with a forehead shot.

Each Mexican goal ended with a hug between the scorer and Vergara, the new face of soccer.

The discount on the part of Costa Rica was in charge of Fabiola Villalobos.

GOOOOOOOLAZOOOO OF MEXICO!

Vergara featured most of the best Mexican footballers, except for Charlyn Corral, the Atlético de Madrid forward, who was absent due to injury.

Those who were there were the players who have found a new shine in the Mexican League, those who play at the university level in the United States and a small legion in Europe led by Kenti Robles, forged in Spanish football and who plays for Real Madrid.

The Mexican Women's League, founded in 2017, had already had its approaches to the colossal Azteca stadium.

Club América, which should play on that lawn, has been relegated to some club training grounds.

The saturation of matches, according to the stadium administrators, has prevented the soccer players from playing every 15 days.

The Mexicans, under the orders of Vergara, have put an end to the ostracism in the Azteca for the Tri female.
