Israel has asked Egypt to intervene in reaching a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, Al-Arabiya reported today (Saturday).

According to the report, Cairo asked Israel to agree to concessions in order to reach an agreement.

Hamas sought relief from hunting and port cases, as well as the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Sources reported that there will be Egyptian-sponsored meetings to reach a deal.

With the outbreak of the corona plague, there have been increasing reports and assessments in Israel that a prisoner exchange deal can be reached in exchange for assistance in the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Last December, Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar reported that Israel had offered to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners who had participated in the murder of Israelis as part of a captive deal with Hamas.

According to the same report, the Israeli proposal includes a waiver of the recommendations of the Shamgar Committee according to which Israel will not release more than one prisoner for every abducted Israeli soldier, will not release prisoners for corpses and will not release prisoners who participated in the murder of Israelis.

A Hamas source told the newspaper that the offer was passed through the Egyptian mediator.

Despite this, Hamas rejected the new proposal and Hazem Qassem, the organization's spokesman, denied any progress on the issue.

Defense officials told Walla!

NEWS that "there is strong opposition to the release of security prisoners who murdered Israelis, including elderly prisoners or with terminal illnesses who were involved in the murder of Israelis."

The sources added that "there are stakeholders in the negotiation process who want to influence it and publish half-truths at best, and lies at worst."

The sources added that "Yahya Sinwar must understand that an opportunity has opened up for him and he must seize it. Israel has no intention of releasing murderers."

The defense establishment also estimated that the more publications about the POW and missing persons transaction, the less likely it is to bring the process to an end.

"Each side wants to show that he stood his ground and what were the reasons why the negotiations failed," said one of the sources, "at this point the negotiations conducted by the Egyptian mediator are defined as stuck."
