Snow in the Golan, yesterday (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
Following the stormy days, an unusual contamination of lumps of viscous tar reached the shores of the country yesterday.
According to the layout of the beaches where they were discovered, which did not include Haifa Bay, it appears that they came from the south and from a great distance.
The source of the tar flakes is probably from a tanker, but the chance of locating those responsible is nil and there is no known vessel in the Mediterranean that reported a malfunction.
The initial discovery was at Habonim Beach followed by Maagan Michael, but later it became clear that this was just the beginning of the largest pollution incident of its kind in the last decade, and tar was seen from Betzet Beach in the north to the shores of Rishon Lezion.
According to initial estimates, these are tens of cubic meters of tar, whose cleaning operations will last several days at an estimated cost of hundreds of thousands of shekels.
