The plainclothes policeman who was assaulted in the southern area of Rosario and killed one of the thieves, a sequence that was taken in detail by two security cameras located in the area, was released when the prosecutor who is working on the case considered that he acted in legitimate defense.
Marcelo Sain, Santa Fe Minister of Security highlighted his task and the local police chief confirmed that he will be decorated with a medal for what he considered a "heroic" attitude.
The 35-year-old agent, who belongs to the Public Order Group, was approached on Thursday at 4:21 p.m. when he was being treated through a window at a place located in Arijón and Corrientes.
Two motorcycle jets had followed him from the city center, where he had conducted a commercial operation.
He had 85 thousand pesos.
The images show how
one of the thieves gets off the motorcycle, loads the gun and points it at him.
After snatching the backpack in which he was carrying the money, he steals his cell phone and returns to the motorcycle where he was expected by an accomplice.
At that moment, the plainclothes policeman pulls out his weapon and when they are facing each other there is an exchange of shots.
It is not clear if he identified himself and called out.
The criminal who was driving the motorcycle was shot in the abdomen.
He tried to escape, but did a few meters with the roll staggering and fell mortally wounded on the sidewalk.
He tried to get up, but couldn't.
The victim was identified: he was 32 years old and his name was Diego Villarruel.
The other thief, a 17-year-old boy, escaped with a wound to his left leg.
He asked for help at a rubber shop and finally took a taxi to go to the hospital, where he was admitted to police custody.
Homicide prosecutor Gastón Avila, in charge of the investigation, insisted that in the first instance it was a case of legitimate defense, although he clarified that the investigation was not closed.
“There is a moment when the life of the policeman is at serious risk of being attacked.
In fact there is an exchange of shots.
The imminent danger to your life is repelled with a proportional means.
It is a necessary response when one is pointed with a firearm.
Even without the autopsy finished, I can't even determine that the person who killed him (the thief) is the policeman.
He may even have a shot from the companion himself who went to steal with him, ”Avila assured.
The judicial official also stressed that
the agent did not shoot in the back
or after one of the criminals fell with his motorcycle on the sidewalk.
In addition, after the confrontation, he verified that the merchants were in good health, called the police, stayed at the scene and handed over his weapon.
"He had a very good behavior," he considered in dialogue with Radio Dos.
Although at first he ordered that it be delayed, the prosecutor defined his freedom within hours.
He evaluated with the elements gathered not only that the situation falls within a legitimate defense, but that there is no risk that the police officer obstructs the investigation or may escape.
The expert reports made it possible to establish that one of the criminals - the minor who was injured in the leg - fired with the .9mm caliber weapon he was carrying.
It is not yet clear how many detonations he made, but it is clear that a bullet entered the premises where the policeman was shopping.
It was only by chance that he did not injure the person who attended that business.
The actions of the agent, identified as NO, were highlighted by the Santa Fe Security Minister and by the Rosario Police Chief, Adrián Forni.
“He was inches away from losing his life.
He, being in civilian clothes, took into account the institutional commitment to society.
For me he is a hero because he faced death.
