Italy today (Sunday) marked the year of the first corona virus death in the country in ceremonies, tree planting and prayers.

Towns in the north of the country were the first to be hit by the virus and go into quarantine, and residents paid homage to the dead.

More than 95,000 people have died in Italy from the disease, the second highest number in Europe after the UK, and 2.8 million people have been diagnosed positive for the virus.

Experts believe that the true mortality rate is higher, because many have never been tested.

After the first wave hit mostly Lombardy and other northern provinces, the second wave that began in the fall spread across the boot country.

The extent of morbidity remains high, despite restrictions on movement between districts, and in some cases between towns.

In addition, gyms, cinemas and other cultural institutions are still closed, while restaurants and bars are only allowed to operate until the early evening hours.

Across the country, from 22:00 to 5:00 there is a curfew.

Just today, the local health ministry reported 232 deaths from the virus in the past day, and 13,452 new diagnoses, although these numbers are slightly lower compared to the previous day.

The rate of vaccines is also unsatisfactory.

Only about 1.3 million people completed the vaccine, out of about 3.5 million people who were vaccinated at least once.

According to a report in the local newspaper "La Stampa", the new prime minister from Radio Draghi wants to increase the rate of vaccinations.

"A person never dies if there is someone who remembers him."

Italy is still under severe restrictions.

The first local corona virus patient in a western country was diagnosed at a hospital in the town of Cuduno on February 20 last year.

It was a 38-year-old young man who was a healthy and sturdy man.

A monument to the victims of the corona was unveiled in the town today, at a ceremony held near the Red Cross offices and in the presence of the governor of Lombardy and the mayor.

The monument, consisting of three steel pillars, represents resilience, community and a fresh start.

During the ceremony, the residents observed a minute of silence.

"There was a panic, a complete panic," recalled Rosaria Sana, one of the town's 15,000 residents, how she felt when the plague broke out.

Even a year later, she recounted, "I'm still scared because it's not over anymore."

Elsewhere in town, residents lit candles at Sunday Mass in the church.

Italy's first patient survived, after being transferred to another hospital and being respirated for several weeks.

But the day after his diagnosis, the first death from the virus was recorded in the country, in the town of Poe, in the nearby province of Veneto.

At a memorial service held today in Po, a tree was planted and a sign was erected on which was engraved a quote by the Italian poet Ugo Poscolo: "A person never dies if anyone remembers him."

The first victim was a 77-year-old retired roof repairman who loved to play cards.
