At least that's the opinion of SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach, who looks at the vaccination rate in Germany on his Twitter account with concern.
"The EU has the oldest population and cannot afford this vaccination rate for a long time in the beginning of the 3rd wave", comments the 58-year-old on a graphic that shows that far fewer people in the EU have received a first dose of vaccine than in the USA, UK or Israel.
Lauterbach also has a possible solution in his tweet on Monday.
"A game changer can only be a pragmatic bringing forward of the first dose, because deaths and hospital cases drop dramatically," suggests the health economist.
The vaccines from BioNTech / Pfizer and AstraZeneca currently used in Germany do not develop their full effect until after the second dose administered, but a decrease in the proportion of severe disease courses was observed in both vaccines after the first dose.

At the weekend Lauterbach had already made clear statements about the vaccination rate in Germany.
“No matter how you twist or turn it.
