The Central and Sheung Wan parade on July 28 of the previous year turned into a police-civilian clash. 24 people were charged with riot crimes. Two of the defendants were charged with assaulting the police and possessing unlicensed radio communication devices. 23 defendants denied all charges. Some defendants were also involved in assaulting police and possessing walkie-talkies, etc.

The charge alleges that they were involved in a riot with others in the area near Des Voeux Road West between West Side Street and Queen Street on July 28 the year before.

The 15th defendant Xu Qingjun was also charged with unlicensed possession of radio communication equipment; the fourth defendant Mo Zhuohui was also charged with assaulting Chief Inspector Deng Zhizhao.

The 17th defendant Jian Jianhuang pleaded guilty earlier, while the remaining 23 denied all charges.

The prosecution suggested that if the court found that the defendant was guilty of rioting, it would consider alternate participation in the crime of illegal assembly.

The police started calling for the demonstrators to leave at 5 p.m.

The prosecution stated that a public meeting was being held at Chater Gardens at 3 pm on the day of the crime that was issued a “Notice of No Objection” by the police. However, a large number of people violated the conditions prescribed by the police and left Chater Gardens and headed towards the center. Walk in the direction of the Joint Office.

There is evidence that 11 of the defendants are suspected of participating in the riot

The prosecution accused each of the defendants of participating in the riot by personally participating in, assisting and instigating others to participate in the riot, and a common criminal plan, and there are direct evidence that 11 of the defendants participated in the riot, such as standing in the front row of the demonstrators’ defense line Confronting the police and throwing sundries, and using personal Octopus transaction records at nearby MTR stations.
