The stereotype of human resource management (HR) in the past was to record the work hours and pay hours of employees.

However, in the age of advanced information and digital technology, HR work has long ceased to revolve around these trivial administrative tasks, but has transformed into the use of different management strategies to develop talent potential and promote the competitiveness of the company.

Get rid of monotonous administrative work and create a good working environment

Dr. Wu pointed out that current HR work includes paying attention to the mental health of employees.

Dr. Wu Huakong, who teaches the Master of Science in Human Resource Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and has witnessed the development of human resource management for many years, said that the previous HR work mainly revolved around employees’ working conditions, personnel information management, salary and benefits, and employment regulations. The society began to pursue "Work-Life Balance", and the company has increasingly paid attention to the mental health and welfare of employees.

Therefore, the general HR work also includes the "employee psychology" category, and the creation of a healthy working environment is the first.

"In the past, companies paid less attention to the mental health of employees. Today's HR will help employees solve their psychological problems, and they will also improve their overall development by organizing workshops and adjusting benefits."

Institutional management emphasizes many factors. It can be seen from the company's greater attention to employee health that talent management is also an important part of institutional management.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been offering a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management since 2002. Any professional and academic background is welcome to apply, bringing human resource management thinking into all walks of life.

Covering different levels of knowledge helps application work

The course includes 11 subjects covering different levels of human resource management, including human resource management, organizational behavior and business ethics.

In addition, students can also choose subjects such as workplace health, negotiation and conflict management, salary and benefits management, and leadership.

Dr. Wu pointed out that the trainees come from different work backgrounds, not necessarily engaged in human resource management. "The careers of trainees are diversified, such as engineers, flight attendants, dentists, makeup artists, auditors, social workers, principals, etc." It means that because the students come from different backgrounds, in addition to imparting theoretical knowledge, the courses can also cultivate students' interpersonal and communication skills for use in work.

Filling in the lack of knowledge helps develop a career

Since the course does not have undergraduate background restrictions, it can also be regarded as a conversion course, allowing non-HR undergraduate students to supplement relevant knowledge and apply it to work, or transfer to the HR industry.

The new crown pneumonia severely hit the economy.

However, Dr. Wu believes that when the epidemic is over, the market will desperately need people who can manage human resources with new perspectives and innovative thinking.

"The new crown pneumonia has permanently changed the work model. At present, various organizations in society urgently need leaders who can balance the needs of employees and corporate profitability. After the epidemic, companies must accelerate the acquisition and cultivation of human talents to maintain competitiveness. The chief talent officer is in the company. Important decisions play a pivotal role, and human resource management will be responsible for formulating strategic directions to achieve corporate success."

Nickson pointed out that the course can be summarized with the words "repair" and "intensive".

Nickson, who studied psychology and philosophy undergraduate degree, worked in HR work in public institutions after graduation. He felt that he lacked relevant foundation, so he applied for courses.

Nickson, who has already completed the course, shared that the course can be summarized by the terms "basic" and "intensive".

"The first year of the course will start with operations management, marketing and other business courses, and the second year will focus on studying various HR functions." Nickson, who currently works at the information technology company HR, said his goal is to continue to develop in the HR industry. The course just fills up the shortcomings that my undergraduate is not an HR.

"Frankly speaking, I feel that taking the course has broadened my horizons, allowed me to understand the working models of other companies' HR, and added some technical and conceptual knowledge, which enabled me to successfully find this new job."

Celia also said that the course offers a large number of business courses, hoping to lay a good foundation for students.

Celia, who graduated last year, also agreed that the course will help the HR industry.

Celia has worked in HR related positions such as talent recruitment and consultant in pharmaceutical factories.

She pointed out that talent recruitment is only one of HR's work areas, and human resource management also includes other parts such as salary and benefits and employee development training.

Since Celia is not studying for HR undergraduate, I decided to apply for courses.

After applying for Celia, I found that because HR work involves many business operations, the course offers a large number of business courses to lay a solid foundation for students.

"Many subjects are related to business. They may be strategic management, finance and accounting, and some are marketing courses, which are like laying a solid foundation for you to deal with later HR subjects."

A company, big or small, always needs people to manage its own talents.

Dr. Wu believes that Hong Kong companies have always had a high demand for HR talents.

"In fact, human resource management is very important, covering talent recruitment, training and development, employee physical and mental development, employee performance evaluation, etc. Proper human resource management can definitely enhance the competitiveness of an enterprise. Today, human resource management is even more of a corporate strategy development An important part of this, making good use of talents is the way to a company’s success."
