Corona lockdown "really sucks your nerves": Zugspitz Region is asking the hotel and catering industry

The Zugspitz Region is expecting a representative mood from the survey that is currently being conducted among tourism companies.

The data should also be used for discussions with the state government.

  • Corona lockdown puts tourism in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district "at risk".

  • The results of the survey should serve as a basis for discussions with decision-makers.

  • The mood among hoteliers, restaurateurs and their employees is gradually changing.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen -

The mood is changing.

Christian Bär is certain of that.

The renewed extension of the lockdown to March 7th "completely demotivated many colleagues," says the district chairman of the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association (BHG).

Especially since an opening of the hotels and restaurants is not in sight.

"If this continues, tourism is in danger for years."

Garmisch-Partenkirchen's mayor Elisabeth Koch and six of her colleagues have also expressed this concern in an open letter to Prime Minister Markus Söder.

Bear are happy about these initiatives.

Everyone who stands up for the tourism industry in these times "is helpful".

That is why the director of the Alpenhof in Murnau also welcomes the current survey by the Zugspitz Region GmbH.

Survey runs until the end of February

With this, “we want to capture a picture of the current situation of restaurants and hotels,” explains Managing Director Sebastian Kramer, who is also the district's economic developer.

The findings should then serve as a data basis for discussions with decision-makers and interest groups.

In order to get a realistic picture, he hopes that as many companies as possible from the district take part.

So far, he and his colleagues have only focused on tourism and events.

“But we can imagine expanding that,” emphasizes Kramer.

For example on retail.

First, the employees in the Zugspitz Region are waiting to see how many answers they will have by the end of February.

In addition to details on the operation and the number of employees, lost sales, government support and the company's situation are also queried.

"It is clear to everyone what the hotel and restaurant business looks like," says Manuel Huber, deputy managing director of Alpenwelt Karwendel GmbH.

The second lockdown in particular, which has been running since November 1, 2020, "is very nerve-wracking".

The mood among the hosts is depressed.

Private landlords in particular, who have not yet been able to expect any government aid, are hit hard by the forced inaction.

Huber already knows this from two previous surveys that were made in the Isar valley alone.

After the current lockdown has been extended for the second time, he thinks it makes sense to get a district-wide picture of the mood.

"Also to be prepared for talks with the state government."

Hope that the Zugspitz region will be heard

Christian Bär sees it similarly.

After the BHG with its 17,000 members has not been able to achieve anything so far, it hopes that the Zugspitz region - “a strong brand” - will be heard.

The lack of prospects after almost four months is causing massive problems for hoteliers, restaurateurs and their employees, emphasizes the BHG district chairman.

“That breaks our cross.” State support has flowed for commercial operations - 84 of the November aid has already been paid out, of which almost 50 percent was paid out for December.

"Otherwise it wouldn't have worked." By Easter this money would have been used up.

Whether or not Bär and his colleagues will then be allowed to reopen has not yet been determined to his lack of understanding.

"Apparently we are the last link in the series."

The ingenious hygiene concepts, in which hoteliers and restaurateurs have invested a lot, are completely ignored.

The incidence values alone count.

“But even there you should stick to the announcements,” says Bär.

First it was said that a seven-day incidence below 50 is decisive for loosening, "now it's suddenly 35".

This also clouded the mood among his colleagues and increased their existential fears.

Bär is by no means one of those who demonize the corona measures.

“I really have a lot of respect for the disease and the dead,” he says.

However, he demands “that we finally get our lives back - within a reasonable framework”.
