A group of former IDF officials at the Mossad, the Atomic Energy Commission and Iranian experts today (Monday) sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Bnei Gantz, in which they expressed support for US President Joe Biden's intention to return to the 2015 nuclear deal. The

letter, signed by the chairman of the "Commanders for Israel's Security" movement, former Minister Matan Vilnai, summarizes the recommendations of a team of experts, including former Mossad chief Tamir Pardo, the reserve general Nitzan Alon, who was the general manager of Iran Former Netanyahu's National Security Adviser Uzi Arad, former deputy head of the Atomic Energy Commission Eli Levita and 20 other former senior members of the defense establishment and experts on Iran.

"We welcome the US initiative to bring Iran back to compliance with the restrictions of the nuclear deal, provided it includes "Iran fully complies with all its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on the development of dual-purpose missiles and regulatory agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency," team members wrote in a letter to Netanyahu and Gantz.

The letter was sent amid a discussion today between Netanyahu and Gantz, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat, Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, Mossad chief Yossi Cohen and other senior members of the defense establishment to formulate an Israeli strategy for discussions with the Biden administration on the nuclear deal.

The team members wrote that they supported Biden's approach that the removal or reduction of US sanctions on Iran should be done only in exchange for full Iranian compliance with all commitments in the nuclear deal, adding in a letter to Netanyahu to Gantz that they believe Biden's parallel full implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal

Efforts must

be made to formulate a new, longer-term nuclear deal.

"The possibility of addressing Iran's challenges diplomatically must first be exhausted, hence the vigorous pursuit now of not only Iran's full compliance with the previous nuclear deal but also a new, long-term continuation agreement. "Weaknesses identified in the latest agreement will take into account the information accumulated since the signing of the nuclear deal and address all other problematic issues posed by Iran," they stressed in the letter.

However, team members wrote that Israel must reach an understanding with the Biden administration that if the diplomatic route with Iran fails, the United States will leave the military option on the table.

"It is to be hoped that the current administration in the United States will reaffirm its commitment to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if the diplomatic effort to achieve this goal does not go well and will make this clear to Iran," they noted in the letter.

The team suggested that Israel ask the United States to clarify to the Iranians what actions in the field of nuclear and missiles, as well as in the field of regional subversion, would be a red line for the administration.

"There aspire that the United States will make it clear to Iran that it must not engage in any activities related to developing nuclear weapons and documented in the archives nucleus and avoid any delay in providing unhindered access to UN inspectors", emphasized in the letter.

Another recommended that the team that Jerusalem will ask Washington to emphasize to Tehran that The development of accurate, long-range missiles as well as unmanned aerial vehicles and their transfer to terrorist organizations in the area would also be unacceptable.

The team members recommended that Netanyahu and Gantz resume the activities of the "Iran Forum" of Israel and the United States, which also worked during the Obama administration and the Trump administration to coordinate positions and actions vis-à-vis the Iranians.

"Close cooperation between the United States and Israel will best serve not only the common interests of the two countries, but will also contribute to the stability, security and well-being of the entire region," they wrote.

"Tactical disagreements regarding the course of action against Iran should not be allowed to distract us from advancing our common goals and values."

The "Commanders for Israel's Security" movement includes more than 300 former senior members of the IDF, the Mossad, the Shin Bet, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Atomic Energy Committee and the police.
