Lettenholzschule will have to wait years for a new building

That was a clear announcement from Tölz treasurer Hermann Forster when it came to Tölz financial planning for the coming years.

"We are currently unable to build the new Lettenholzschule."

Bad Tölz

- A study commissioned by the city showed that a general renovation of the aging school would be more expensive than a new building.

"But even there we are talking about an amount clearly in the double-digit million amount," said Chamberlain Hermann Forster at the city's most recent budget consultations.

So the project slipped way down the priority list.

Contrary to what was expected, this is not necessarily a broken leg for headmistress Bärbel Weixner.

The 55-year-old has been the head of the elementary school on the eastern city limits since 2014.

When the city started the major Jahnschule project (kindergarten, school, auditorium, gym), which cost 12.6 million euros, it had already thought that its Lettenholzschule would “have to wait a few more years”.

Especially since expensive renovation measures are also pending at the southern school.

Even in their six decades old elementary school on Flinthöhe with currently eight classes and a little less than 180 students, the building fabric is not exactly good.

On a tour, Bärbel Weixner shows an extensive, unplastered basement.

What was it for?

“I don't know,” says the headmistress.

It is difficult to access, full of rubble, and yet has to be checked regularly for water ingress.

The workroom and other classrooms in the basement smell a little pungent.

There are damp spots in the masonry, cracks in the plaster and sometimes windows that are not completely airtight.

The gym with wooden floor exudes the charm of the 1950s, is almost only suitable for ball games, but has a small stage.

Bärbel Weixner likes her school despite all its weaknesses and is actually very happy that she will probably not see a new building until she retires in twelve years.

“Now we have large, bright and friendly classrooms”.

With a new building they would certainly be significantly smaller, because the city would of course have to follow the subsidy guidelines of the state.

The school is currently facing south, which would change if the building was replaced instead of the current gym.

“We have a wonderful, large playground”.

It would definitely not be that big in the future.

The area is so extensive that part of it - not least for counter-financing - would be used for residential development.

Bärbel Weixner has the impression that the old school is also popular with pupils and parents, which in turn has a lot to do with “the basic mood at our school is good” - even if the house is old.

The proportion of migrants in the school is quite high at 60 to 70 percent.

“Our children come from around 15 different countries,” says Weixner with a smile.

On the subject of a good mood, she adds that there are always students from the FOS, for example, who want to do their internship “at their old school”.

The city's latest investments in fire protection, for example, are an indication that the new building will still take a few years.

Money is also used for the interior design.

"The city has been very generous for some time now," says Weixner and hopes for more, for example when it comes to IT and technical equipment.
