Meatless meals in school canteens: the quack of Paris

2021-02-22T18:40:21.397Z

While the announcement by the city hall of Lyon to remove meat from the school canteen is debated, the health assistant of the city of Paris briefly announced a similar track in the capital, before being denied.

For several days, the debate has been raging about the announcement of the town hall of Lyon to remove meat from the school canteen.

While farmers demonstrate with their cattle on the Place de l'Hotel de Ville in Lyon, the deputy in charge of Health at the mayor of Paris, Anne Souyris, said on Monday on

BFMTV

that a track is being studied concerning the canteens of Parisian schools.

However, on the side of the city of Paris, the answer is not the same.

According to information published by Le Parisien, "

if meatless menus can be" an interesting solution, the question is not at all on the table in Paris

 ".

Information confirmed by the mayor of Paris

in Figaro

Anne Souyris then said that several solutions were being considered in Paris, including this one, "

for practical reasons

".

Same argument as Grégory Doucet, the EELV mayor of Lyon, the choice of a single menu without meat is the simplification of the service, in a sanitary framework difficult to maintain in the canteens at the time of the Covid-19.

A "

false debate

" for Souyris, a "

double talk

" for Collomb

On BFMTV, the deputy mayor of Paris recalled that this is a measure that was taken by Gérard Collomb in May 2020: “

It's really quite strange, when we know that we must go in this meaning for health reasons and for reasons of respect for the planet, to have a kind of false debate on this.

"

Gérard Collomb, for his part, explains for his part the controversy surrounding this debate by "

a double discourse

", between the sanitary justification and the desire to reduce meat consumption.

The Minister of Agriculture, Julien Denormandie, seized Sunday the prefect of the Rhône on the legality of the question of the menus without meat imposed by the ecological town hall of Lyon in the school canteens.

An answer which will be given shortly.
