Paris: new round of layoffs in the hotel industry

2021-02-22T16:22:21.385Z

No less than 260 job cuts have been announced at the Marriott Rive Gauche hotel, which will close for three years for work. In the capital

One more.

After the Westin Paris Vendôme (1st), the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile at Porte Maillot (17th century) and the Méridien Etoile, a new luxury hotel has just announced a vast layoff plan in the capital.

This time it is the Marriott Left Bank (XIV).

"They are going to put out 260 people out of 273 employees, to keep only the director and technical executives", warns Abdelali Hammouti, Unsa union representative.

With 13 people remaining, it will obviously be impossible to keep running the establishment.

This is not the goal anyway.

Because the Marriott Rive gauche will close for three years, in order to carry out major renovations.

The staff do not dispute the need for refreshment of a hotel which has not benefited from a makeover for almost ten years.

Except that, according to the union representative, this work could be completed in "twelve to eighteen months".

But the health context would not encourage management - contacted, it did not respond to our requests - to rush the site.

“Professionals are announcing a full resumption of activity in January 2024 for the hotel industry.

In 2022 and 2023, activity should only reach 30%.

At the Marriott Rive Gauche, we need to be 64% full to be profitable.

These three years of closure, therefore, are three years of saved wages, ”Abdelali Hammouti analyzes.

"We are asking for a rehiring of all voluntary employees upon reopening"

“They play with the lives of 260 families when they are able to invest 60 million euros in a renovation project, an employee loses his temper.

We will find ourselves unemployed, in the economic situation we are experiencing.

What will be our future?

"

So the employees intend to fight.

At least to obtain guarantees for the future.

"We are asking for a rehiring of all voluntary employees at the reopening, under the same conditions as at the closing, with their seniority, as is usually done in our sector of activity," says Abdelali Hammouti.

But the management only offers to take back those who have worked in the meantime or have undergone training.

And everyone should accept the position offered to them, even if it does not correspond to their skills.

This case of the Marriott Rive gauche is therefore added to an already too long list.

"It is unacceptable, we are taking advantage of the pandemic, enraged Didier Del Rey, CGT Commerce union delegate in Paris, who does not take off.

The top priority must be rehiring.

These hotels benefit from state aid.
