British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will call on Tuesday for urgent action against climate change, at the risk if not of increasing insecurity on the planet, during a virtual summit of leaders gathered at his initiative at the UN Security Council .

"From communities uprooted by extreme weather events and hunger, to warlords profiting from the scramble for resources: a warming planet fuels insecurity,"
said the British leader, whose country chaired in February on Security Council, ahead of this meeting.
"Unlike many issues the Council deals with, we know exactly how to respond to this one,"
he added in a statement.
"By helping vulnerable countries adapt to climate change and reducing net global emissions to zero, we will not only protect our planet's abundant biodiversity, but also its prosperity and security."
This virtual summit of leaders aims to discuss the implications of climate change for world peace, a subject on which the 15 members of the Security Council have divergent approaches.

This session is being held a few days after the formal return of the United States, under the leadership of Democrat Joe Biden, in the 2015 Paris agreement to limit global warming.
In November, the United Kingdom will host the major UN climate conference (COP26) in Glasgow.
The country aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 68% by 2030 compared to 1990, and wants to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.
