The Italian ambassador to Kinshasa was killed today during an armed attack targeting a World Food Program convoy during a visit near Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
AFP quoted a diplomatic source in Kinshasa as saying that Ambassador Luca Atanazio “died of his wounds,” while the Congolese army spokesman in North Kivu, Major Guillaume Dyck, indicated that two other people were killed in the attack, without specifying their identities.
For its part, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the killing of its ambassador, Atanazio, noting that he was on a "trip with a UN convoy in eastern DR Congo."
And armed groups spread in the eastern regions of the DRC, which carry out attacks from time to time targeting villagers.
