The U.S. Supreme Court today (Monday) paved the way for a lawsuit in New York to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax refunds as part of a criminal investigation.

Unsurprisingly, the judges rejected Trump's request to freeze a Oct. 7 court ruling in a lower court ordering his veteran accounting firm Mazars USA to comply with a jury's request to obtain the documents.

"The work continues," said Manhattan prosecutor Cyrus Vance, the Democrat who is leading the investigation.

Vance has already made it clear to Trump's lawyers that his office will be entitled to immediately enforce the order if the court rejects the appeal.

An attorney for Trump declined to comment.

The Supreme Court, which has a majority of six conservative judges versus three liberals, rejected as early as July Trump's more basic argument that he is immune from a criminal investigation as incumbent president.

Three of the conservative judges were appointed throughout the tenure of the former Republican president.

Unlike past presidents, Trump has refused to disclose his tax refunds throughout his four years in office.

The information could shed light on his source of capital and the activities of the family company, the Trump organization.

Vance demanded Trump's private and corporate tax refunds from 2011 to 2018, as early as August 2019. The

investigation, one of several the former president is dealing with, focuses on the silence fees his former attorney Michael Cohen passed to two women before the 2016 election.

The two women - porn actress Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougall - said they had sex with him.

In a recent lawsuit filed by a Manhattan prosecutor in court, he said the investigation has already expanded and also deals with suspected bank fraud, tax and insurance, along with forging business documents.

At the same time, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives also demands to see Trump's tax refunds.

This lawsuit is still pending in the courts, after the Supreme Court returned it to lower courts in July.
