Truck or bus drivers, mechanics ... Job offers for these professions have not weakened despite the Covid-19, and the trend

If travel has been limited for a year, there is still just as much need for transport professionals.

Maybe even more than usual since this is one of the areas of activity that has never been at a standstill, including during the two lockdowns linked to the Covid-19 crisis .

"While some sectors are" under cover ", such as catering, accommodation or aeronautics, others are on the contrary in tension and are struggling to recruit," recalls Frédéric Danel, regional director of Pôle emploi.

More than 200 training courses available immediately

Health, personal services, construction, industry and maintenance thus represent, on their own, two-thirds of the 40,000 jobs offered by Pôle emploi in Hauts-de-France, 55% of which are permanent contracts (contracts to undetermined duration).

The Oise is no exception to these trends but also has its own characteristics, such as a sustained search for candidates for road transport companies.

"There are strong needs," confirms Estelle Charles, regional director of Pôle Emploi for the Oise.

At the start of 2021, we have more than 200 training courses available for this type of position.

Systems developed in conjunction with companies in the sector, which constitute real highways to employment.

“I was hired in two weeks, testifies Gabriel Noclain, now at the wheel of his truck.

I worked in the demolition sector and I wanted to retrain because there are almost only truckers in my family!

Thanks to the training, I was able to pass the heavy truck license and, at the moment, my employer allows me to take the super heavy truck license.

"

And if the activity of the transport sector did not weaken during the crisis, the health restrictions did not facilitate the methods of recruitment.

"Impossible to organize trade fairs or recruitment sessions with a lot of people, while the demands of companies for candidates are real", notes Lorenzo Negretti, director of a Promotrans training center.

Wave of retirements among truck drivers

Somehow, “we still manage to set up meetings, outdoors, with a truck driving simulator, which gives job seekers a first idea of the job,” continues the manager.

Even before the Covid-19 crisis, there were already recruitment opportunities due to a wave of retirements in the profession of truck drivers.

"

Without forgetting, on a regional scale this time, the colossal construction site of the Seine-Nord canal, which should generate between 3,000 and 6,000 job creations, including a thousand drivers of trucks and other vehicles.

The number of indirect jobs generated by this program is estimated between 10,000 and 13,000, all along the 107-kilometer route between Compiègne and Aubencheul-au-Bac (North).
