B 472 in Miesbach: traffic lights receive updates for better traffic flow

They are one of the bottlenecks for commuters and day trippers: the four traffic lights on the B472 through Miesbach determine where the traffic flows.

Miesbach -

Well, the Stöger-Ostin-Straße is perhaps not one of the most frequented junctions on the main road in Miesbach.

But if you do stand at the traffic light next to the Weingärtner car dealership, you need a little more patience.

It is true that right-turns with a green arrow are allowed to enter Bayrischzeller Straße when they are red.

But as soon as there are a left turn or two at the head of the queue, it can take time.

And sometimes quite long.

A reader of our newspaper reports that waiting times of up to six minutes are not uncommon.

Your suspicion: If, out of consideration, people turning left lean too far to the left to create space to drive past despite the narrow lane for those turning right, the intelligent traffic light does not recognize the waiting cars and remains red.

If this is the case, the road users must be informed of this by a sign.

Priority has the green phase on the federal highway

Simon Irger, traffic clerk at the Miesbach police station, can allay this concern.

The traffic lights in question should not be viewed in isolation, but rather as part of an entire system along the B 472 in Miesbach.

This is currently receiving a software update to adapt the circuits to the different traffic volumes.

For example, programs for business or excursion traffic are planned in which the green phases on Bayrischzeller Straße have priority in order to keep the flow of traffic running.

"Otherwise nothing works anymore."

Conversely, the traffic lights on Stöger-Ostin-Straße sometimes turn green, even if only one car is waiting at the junction.

“Otherwise you never get out of there.” At least if the traffic lights on the B 472 were red, the vehicles at the Weingärtner car dealership would have free travel.

This could take a little longer, especially at rush hour on the main road.

55 to 100 seconds waiting time on Stöger-Ostin-Straße

A maximum of 100 seconds, the competent Rosenheim road construction authority informs our newspaper upon request.

That is the upper limit in the traffic light program planned for excursion traffic on the federal highway.

Outside of the rush hour at the weekend or in commuting traffic, however, one does not stand for longer than 55 seconds.

An intermittent malfunction of the camera at the traffic light in question, which was probably the trigger for the complaints of the motorists, has been fixed. The update described by Irger should bring further improvements.

Until recently, the four traffic lights on Bayrischzeller Strasse all worked in the rigid standard mode.

The only clocks were the day and time.

“The programs were up to 25 years old,” reports the responsible traffic engineer at the road construction department.

With the introduction of the left-turn lane at the intersection of Rosenheimer Strasse in order to defuse the focus of accidents there for pedestrians, the decision was made to modernize.

Traffic lights should receive programs adapted to the traffic flow

Induction loops now count the actual traffic volume on the asphalt and thus trigger the individual situational switching programs via a connected traffic computer in Munich.

However, the system is not yet operational, adds the traffic engineer restrictively.

Due to the changed traffic movements due to the corona pandemic (home office, excursion restrictions, ...), a start currently makes no sense.

The new circuit needs a sample that is as representative as possible in order to be able to familiarize itself with it.

In terms of traffic safety, there is nothing to complain about at the traffic lights on Stöger-Ostin-Straße.

The confluence is not a focus of accidents - probably thanks to the traffic lights.

As far as the flow of traffic is concerned, a separate left-turn lane would certainly be helpful, says Irger.

"But unfortunately the narrow lane doesn't allow that."

On the other hand, one cannot simply extend the green phase, adds the road construction authority's expert.

Priority is given to traffic on the main road, and it has to come through Miesbach in a (rigid) wave from the first traffic light.

"Otherwise it will build up everywhere."
