New York-Sana

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the creation of a "true global alliance" to commit to net zero emissions by the middle of this century.

Guterres said during a videoconference in a discussion at the Security Council on "Maintaining international peace and security .. Climate and security" Reducing poverty, food insecurity and climate-induced displacement contribute to maintaining peace and reducing conflict risks.

Participants discussed the role of the Security Council in addressing climate-related security risks through a peace-building approach and support for adaptation and resilience in environments prone to climate change.

Guterres called for action to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 ° C by the end of the century compared to pre-industrial levels and protect people and societies affected by climate disruption.

Guterres stressed the need to intensify preparations for the escalating repercussions on international peace and security resulting from the climate crisis.

Guterres said climate change is draining rivers, reducing agricultural yields, destroying infrastructure, displacing communities and exacerbating risks of instability.

Guterres called for strong and ambitious climate measures to be taken with the necessity to put the world on the right track to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and avoid a climate catastrophe, calling for immediate measures to be taken to protect countries, societies and people from the increasingly frequent and severe climate impacts, with the need to significantly raise the level of investments.

He added that the Corona pandemic demonstrated the extent of the devastation that unconventional security threats can cause on a global scale.

The Secretary-General called on countries to make specific, ambitious contributions with goals to reduce global emissions by 45 percent by 2030 from 2010 levels, calling on all companies, cities and financial institutions to prepare concrete and credible plans to reduce carbon emissions.

He also urged developed countries to fulfill their pledge to provide 100 billion dollars annually to the countries of the Southern Hemisphere after the deadline for that last year had passed.
