The federal government wants to decide on Wednesday to extend the deployment of the Bundeswehr in Afghanistan.
This is to be extended until January 31 of next year.
Changes to the content of the mandate are not planned, the upper limit of the soldiers involved is still 1,300. They are part of the NATO training mission "Resolute Support".
The Bundeswehr's Afghanistan mandate currently runs until the end of March.
The extension still requires the approval of the Bundestag.
Parliament is expected to decide on this in the last week of March.
The Bundeswehr is responsible for one of five NATO areas in the north of Afghanistan.
There are currently around 1,100 Bundeswehr soldiers on site.
The Bundeswehr currently has the second largest contingent after the US Army, which has 2,500 soldiers in the country after a significant reduction in troops under former President Donald Trump.
In view of the uncertainty as to how and whether NATO will continue its operation in the Hindu Kush, a time-based compromise solution will be chosen with a view to the federal elections in September.
On the one hand, the time required to form a government should be taken into account.
On the other hand, a new decision on the deployment of the armed forces should be possible quickly after the election.
