Lars Feld is likely to leave his post as chairman of the economic sector this Friday.
The SPD has blocked another term of office of the economist at the head of the Expert Council to assess the overall economic development.
For this decision, CDU chief Armin Laschet has now sharply criticized Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD).
Feld is one of the most renowned scientists in the social market economy, Laschet tweeted on Tuesday.
"With arrogance and ignorance in the middle of the pandemic, the SPD finance minister prevents him from continuing to work in the Expert Council," the tweet continued.
Expertise is more important than ever, especially in times of crisis.
Feld had been leaving for some time.
The Union parties wanted to hold onto the economist.
However, the SPD prevented the desired contract extension.
According to reports, the SPD preferred a candidate like the Düsseldorf economist Jens Südekum.
This is closer to positions of the SPD, it said.
But there was no consensus on this in the coalition, so that there is initially no successor for Feld.
As a rule, the term of office of a member of the Expert Council ends after two periods, this is now also the case with Feld.
Politically, Feld stands for an economic course that is oriented towards the principles of market and competition and is against a major influence of the state.
He is Professor of Economic Policy and Regulatory Economics at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and Director of the Walter Eucken Institute.
Feld has been Chairman of the Expert Council since March 2020, of which he has been a member since March 2011.
The five-person council of experts to assess macroeconomic developments advises politics.
The experts are colloquially referred to as the »economic wise men«.
It has apparently not yet been determined when there will be a replacement.
It is possible that the personnel will only be clarified after the general election.
