More than three years after the car bomb murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta, a court has sentenced one of three defendants to 15 years in prison.
The man had recently pleaded surprisingly guilty in the process.
The confession was taken into account in the sentence, said the judge when pronouncing the verdict.
The confession marks a turning point in the Valletta trial, in which three men are charged with murder and have so far denied their guilt.
The other two men did not initially change their statements.
It was also announced on Tuesday that three other people had been arrested in connection with the murder.
According to police, three men were arrested who are suspected of providing the explosive device used in the attack on the blogger.
The blogger was blown up in her car on October 16, 2017.
According to the indictment, the now convicted and the two other defendants are said to have detonated the explosive device from a distance.
The murder of the journalist in an EU country caused a stir around the world and resulted in a series of resignations at the highest political level in Malta.
Galizia had reported corruption in politics and business in her country.
According to their research, members of the government were also involved.
Another case is ongoing in Malta against an alleged mastermind.
The influential businessman was arrested on his yacht off the coast of Malta in 2019 while trying to flee.
The hearings in his case have not yet started.
The family of the murdered considers him to be the possible perpetrator of the murder.
