The earth is warming up.

Bavaria too.

The climate report 2021 makes gloomy forecasts.

Environment Minister Glauber has also announced a new climate package.

Munich - There are still people who deny climate change.

But facts speak a clear language, said Bavaria's Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters) at the presentation of the Climate Report 2021. It was presented on Wednesday in Munich and predicts that the situation in Bavaria will worsen by 2100.

The average temperature will rise up to 4.8 degrees if nothing is done about it.

Every year in which no countermeasures are taken aggravate the challenge for future generations, says Glauber.

As in the corona pandemic *, people's health protection must also come first in climate policy.

In the new climate report, the previous forecasts from 2015 have been corrected upwards by 0.3 degrees.

In the 196-page report, the reference period is the range from 1971 to 2000.

Climate Report Bavaria 2021: Up to 36 more hot days a year

According to the report, it is not only the average temperature in the Free State that will change - with different regional characteristics.

There could also be up to 36 more hot days, i.e. days with a minimum temperature of 30 degrees.

For comparison: Between 1971 and 2000 there were just four hot days per year.

The number of cool nights in the summers is also likely to decrease.

Up to a maximum of 18 tropical nights over 20 degrees are possible in the Free State.

In addition to the temperatures, the precipitation * will also change.

The general amount of rain will hardly change, but irregularities will increase.

As a result, as in previous years, there will be longer dry periods and more frequent and more intensive heavy rain events including floods in all parts of the country.

This also threatens valuable soils to be washed away.

The extent of soil erosion could double or even triple.

Climate change in Bavaria: Environment Minister announces Climate Package II

Environment Minister Glauber sees the Climate Report not only as a mandate to act, but also as confirmation of the goal of making Bavaria climate-neutral by 2050 at the latest: “We are challenged to tackle the issue with all our might.

The climate report makes you sit up and take notice. ”The new dynamic of change worries him too, admitted Glauber.

Because part of the truth is that the lifestyle in Germany is an important factor for climate change.

The course for more climate protection in Bavaria has already been set, stressed Glauber.

Nevertheless, the goals would have to be "screwed up" again.

The environment minister announced a climate package II.

Above all, natural climate protection, for example the protection of the moors, municipal and international climate protection as well as renewable energies are the new priorities.

In future, Bavaria will also correct its climate targets upwards in line with the federal government *.

Bavarian climate law under fire: voluntariness instead of prohibition

Last year, the CSU and free voters brought the Bavarian climate protection law through the state parliament *.

The goal: climate neutrality by 2050. For this purpose, there is a 96-point catalog of measures, which includes, for example, massive reforestation or the protection of moors.

However, the law dispenses with clearly defined bans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The implementation of the catalog of measures is voluntary.

Critics therefore see the law as useless.

But not everything is lost.

The long-established climate change can still be mitigated.

If the Paris Climate Agreement is successfully implemented worldwide, the temperature in Bavaria would no longer increase significantly by 2050 at the latest.

By the end of the century, a temperature increase of 1.1 degrees would be likely, say the experts.

Environment Minister Glauber: The heart of climate neutrality is renewable energies

“The heart of climate neutrality is the decentralized supply of renewable energies,” said Glauber.

From 2022 it will be essential to equip state buildings with photovoltaic systems.

Systems would also have to be built on commercial and private areas.

Nationwide, there are three million houses with ideal roofs.

Tobias Fuchs, head of the Climate and Environment division of the German Weather Service (DWD) emphasized that the past three years had been significantly too dry, and at the same time heat records were recorded.

“For the future, the amount of precipitation and its effects are decisive.” Nobody is spared.

As a result, an increase in extreme events such as the flash flood in Simbach am Inn 2016 or the continuous snowfalls in 2019 * is to be expected.

The Climate Report 2021 contains all relevant facts and figures about climate change in Bavaria and can be downloaded from the Ministry's website. It should clarify the question of how climate change is developing in Bavaria and where its effects can already be felt today. The 2015 Climate Report assumed a maximum temperature of up to 4.5 degrees Celsius for Bavaria in 2100.
