BRUSSELS -
Calls, text messages and data will continue to cost abroad as at home for those traveling in the EU until 2032
: this is what the European Commission proposes in its
revision of the roaming regulation
aimed at extending the current rules, expiring in June 2022, for another 10 years and to improve the benefits for citizens.
In the proposed regulation, Brussels provides that consumers are
entitled to the same quality and speed of connection and services for the mobile network abroad as in their own country
, wherever equivalent networks are available.
The new rules, reads the note from the EU executive, "will also guarantee efficient access to emergency services and greater consumer awareness of the possible rates deriving from the use of value-added services while roaming".
The abolition of paid roaming, which entered into force in June 2017, "is an established and successful cornerstone for the single market" and "today we confirm our commitment to our citizens", said the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, underlining that "in the European digital decade everyone must have excellent connectivity wherever they are in Europe, just like at home".
Faced with the challenge of the digital transition, the EU is committed to "supporting investments in adequate infrastructures", he added.
