The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, reappeared this Tuesday on the national television network after more than 40 days of absence and assured that his government is managing the acquisition of the vaccine against covid-19, although he did not give a date for the arrival of the doses and did not provide details of the national immunization plan.

Ortega reported that Russia, India and the World Health Organization have made the drugs available to the country, although he specified that they would not arrive quickly.

"As the WHO itself has said, first they are applying them in developed countries, which have more money to buy, and they themselves dispute the purchase of the vaccine," said the president in an act that commemorated the 87th anniversary of the murder. of General Augusto C. Sandino.

Without alluding to any laboratory, Ortega denounced that the vaccines did not come quickly because the manufacturers first delivered the drugs to the countries that paid more for them.

Despite the fact that Ortega claims to have funds to purchase the drugs, the situation in Nicaragua contrasts with other countries in the region.

At the beginning of February, the health minister Martha Reyes told official media that the 540,000 vaccines that the country will receive as part of the Covax mechanism will be destined for health personnel, the elderly and chronic patients, but they have not yet said where it will be placed and what is the mechanism to access the drug.
