Holzkirchen

- Anyone who walks in Holzkirchen every day knows these places: the Herdergarten, the Alte Post, the Teufelsgraben.

But where does the name Herdergarten come from?

How long has the Alte Post been around?

And what is the devil doing in the market town?

Answers to such questions are now provided by an app, a program for mobile phones written by students at the Holzkirchen State High School.

This “Smartguide for Holzkirchen”, which is also available as a website, tells Holzkirchen stories digitally.

A total of nine stations can be clicked on, which contain not only informational texts but also audio files and photos.

The program was designed as part of a high school project seminar.

Ben Rech (17) from Oberlainder is one of the nine students who were involved in the development.

“First we looked at other examples, such as the one from Garmisch,” he says of the beginnings in spring 2020. English teacher Christiane Heiland accompanied the project together with German teacher Michael Rapp.

“We see ourselves as a kind of coach who always gives impetus.

However, it is up to the students to implement it, ”says Heiland.

Then they thought about how to implement a digital guide for Holzkirchen, explains Rech. "Three of us are good at programming, the others have chosen the nine stations." That means: nine interesting places in Holzkirchen.

The market square and the train station are part of it, as is the plague chapel at the old cemetery.

The users of the Smartguide hear the voices of students Takemi Ando and Gottfried Doll, the pastor of the Catholic parish.

He tells that the chapel was built in 1639 as thanks for the end of the plague and explains the structure of the altar.

Photos complement Andos' audio commentary.

For “non-digital natives” they actually wanted to set up information boards with a reference to the app, says Rech. But since most tourists have a cell phone, this idea was rejected again.

Rech, who was responsible for the “Alte Post” station, is satisfied with the result.

"Even if I can't program, I found it exciting to be there." It was a stressful time because you had to work on the app all the time.

But: “You have something that you can also see.” Teacher Heiland is proud of her protégés: “Despite all the adversities with Corona, the students created a great project.” The market town sees it similarly.

"We are of course pleased that the Smartguide is now available and we hope that it is an interesting tool for tourists and business travelers," says town hall spokeswoman Annika Walther.

There are initial considerations to include the website in the community's website.

However, details are not yet known.

Basically, the municipality is striving to expand its digital offer.

It refers to screens that are set up in the HEP shopping center, for example.

In addition, there are considerations to set up digital information pillars in the municipality.

What she particularly appreciates about the high school students' Smartguide is that it is also available in English.

"That could be interesting for business travelers."

Anyone using the Smartguide can look forward to gaining previously unknown views of the place and new insights into the history of the market.

What the devil had to do in Holzkirchen, however, is best found out with the Smartguide in your luggage during a personal visit to the Teufelsgraben.

The app

can be found in the Google Play Store under the name "Smartguide Holzkirchen".

It can be accessed via the browser at the address https: // smartguide-holzkir chen.web.app/home/de.
