Some nonsense spirit.

The artist Marcel Duchamp used to say that "the world must not be taken too seriously, lest we die of boredom and that seriousness is a very dangerous thing, in order to escape from it one must call for the intervention of humor."

Designers are artists themselves, and as such they exude a creative spirit that can sometimes be mixed with a spirit of nonsense.

In a world that requires designers to solve problems and be attentive to what is happening around them, there are designers whose fun and humor are a recurring theme in their work, these enjoy creating original items and moreover do not try to keep them under big words and sophisticated theories.

Designers like Jaime Hayun, Stefano Gibboni, Marcel Wonders and even Philip Stark, design brilliant design items for the home, but all out of great freedom in the name of creativity but also out of their own desire to give them the joy of creation and their users the joy of life.

Items born of the desire of the designers themselves for the joy of creation.

This is not a cliché, but an entire agenda, which characterizes the designers of the mid-20th century.

Engaging in fun and playing with humor were their unique way of expressing themselves and about the way of making people laugh.

Finding the balance between functional design details on the one hand, and humorists on the other, positively affects the quality of life.

And what's better than stretching the mouth muscles, which are sometimes a bit neglected in adults, in the race of life.

It is precisely these days, with the rediscovery of the home space, that many have realized that home design can evoke new emotions and experiences and that items with a wink will soften the atmosphere and add a dimension of joy.

One way to express humor in design is by deviating from the familiar proportions of objects.

A quick look at the designs currently offered in design stores, immediately reveals the fact that many designers enjoy creating original items with a wink.

The bulk of humorous design lies in the element of surprise, which always brings a smile.

For example, a combination of diverse content worlds that are not usually associated with the home space and that do not align with aesthetic acceptances such as the luxurious pre-made chandelier from Girpa (designed by Stefano Gibsoni for Renby);

Intentional deviations in the proportions of familiar objects - miniaturization or magnification (like the Fatboy Dachshund bench for Tollman's) and of course - playful elements (like the rabbit chair designed by Stefano Gibsoni for Renby).

Everything that is colorful, loud, full of humor and even outrageous.

Colors, shapes and lots of humor also characterized the Italian ‘Memphis Group’ whose members came out against the minimalism and clean lines that characterized the decades before them.

The group, which brought together architects and designers from all over the world, celebrated everything that is colorful, loud, full of humor and even outrageous, with the stated goal of going against good taste.

The active group even today has over the years become a symbol of postmodern design.

For those who want to add a little humor to home design, but are afraid of turning the living room into a circus, it is recommended to pay attention to the dosage and context.

As with good jokes, it is best not to go too far.

You can find the humor in various items from small to large - lighting fixtures, sculptures, textile items with amusing prints and more.

From small to large items.

What is important to remember?

  • Get out of the box and dare.

If a design item makes you feel good - you are on the right path.

  • 'Pop' sculptures are a good way to add humor and color to different spaces.

  • Humor in design, can suit any style and design line.

It evokes conversation, gives a contemporary and playful look, and can be applied in all spaces of the house.
