Former left-wing party congress before the pandemic - this year it will take place digitally

Before its party congress, the Left Party tries to send a signal of unity.
According to SPIEGEL information, there should be no battle vote for the office of federal managing director.
Thomas Westphal, who heads the executive office of the left parliamentary group in the Bundestag, is no longer running.
The only applicant will therefore be office holder Jörg Schindler.
The "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" had previously reported on it.
At the party congress, the left re-elects its entire leadership team.
Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger are leaving the board after eight years, Janine Wissler and Susanne Hennig-Wellsow are the designated successors.
But there had been a dispute over the post of federal manager.
Westphal, a loyal to parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch, had brought himself into play against Schindler.
But he is supported by the party leadership.
According to SPIEGEL information, there had recently been talks between the camps that wanted to prevent the conflict.
Westphal had already held preliminary talks with several regional associations, but the response was low.
"Postpone existing differences"
In a joint statement that SPIEGEL has received, Schindler and Westphal now emphasize their willingness to work together.
The starting position is not easy.
"But we are determined to work together with all our might for left-wing successes in the super election year 2021."
Schindler and Westphal admit that there have been differing views on how to organizationally address the party's challenges.
However, "at the time of the internal party struggle" for the post of federal manager, it became clear that these differences were not irreconcilable.
Fair dealings have made a decisive contribution to this.
Both want to "put existing differences aside".
The Left Party Conference will take place completely digitally for the first time on Friday and Saturday.
In the past year, the party had to postpone it twice due to the corona.
The elections to the board of directors should be confirmed again by postal vote.
