The Chinese University of Hong Kong issued a statement stating that the content published by the elected cabinet of the CUHK Student Union in its political platform does not represent the position of the university.
The school also stated that it had issued a statement earlier that it strongly opposed the election declaration issued by the elected cabinet and the remarks made during media interviews. It also communicated with relevant students afterwards to remind them that remarks against national security may be illegal.
The school announced that it has decided to suspend the collection of student union dues for the student union, and requires the student union to register as an independent society or company and assume legal responsibility.
The statement stated that the school will take further measures when necessary according to the situation.

The school stated that the false accusations against the university by cabinet members of the student council and the use of the campus as a platform for political propaganda not only violated the purpose of the university, but also damaged the reputation of the university.
The statement stated that the student union officials did not clarify the alleged illegal and untrue statements after persuasion and reminders. The school decided to suspend the collection of student union dues for the student union, and the student union affiliated organizations are not subject to the subsidy and other financial support arrangements from the university influences.
The Student Affairs Office will follow up if the student services previously provided by the Student Union Office are affected.
Advocate the student union to register as an independent society or company
The school requires the student union to register as an independent association or company, and bear the legal responsibility itself. The registration method is the same as that of other local university student unions and alumni organizations.
The school will suspend the duties of the relevant students of the Student Union Executive Committee in different committees on campus, as well as the administrative and university site support provided by the school for the Student Union Executive Committee.
The statement stated that the school will take further measures when necessary according to the situation.
CUHK reiterated that the Basic Law is the foundation of the rule of law in Hong Kong.
The Basic Law respects and protects the academic freedom, personal freedom of expression and association of universities, and also has provisions to protect national security. Universities will never allow campuses to endanger national security.
If a student makes incitement to illegal remarks, the university will impose severe sanctions, including suspension or expulsion of the student concerned.
