The governments of Argentina and Mexico announced today the opening of the Mexican market to Argentine beef and agreed to strengthen technical cooperation in Agriculture to achieve food security and advance on issues of post-harvest management of small and medium-sized production.
It was communicated by the presidents of Mexico and Argentina,
Manuel López Obrador and Alberto Fernández
, respectively, during the visit of the first Argentine president to the Mexican country.
As they said, the opening of the Mexican market for local beef will be on the same terms that it is currently open to the Mexican market for Uruguayan meats.
In this sense, the Mexican government will instruct the representative of the National Service of Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality of Mexico (SENASICA) in Uruguay to travel to Argentina and agree with the Senasa peers the steps to follow to develop the protocols and enable refrigeration establishments.
The health negotiation has been going on for more than a decade, so for the local meat chain it represents a great opportunity.
This market was closed since 2001 due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Argentine rodeos in those years.
Argentina exported beef in 2020 for 897,500 tons, 8% more than the previous year, setting a new record.
China was the main market, representing 75% of the total.
However, the collection fell due to the lower value that the cuts were marketed.
The value of shipments abroad decreased to $ 2.7 billion, 12% less than in 2019.
Likewise, both countries agreed to strengthen technical cooperation in Agriculture to achieve food security and advance in issues of post-harvest management of production by
transferring bag silos technology
, which will help improve storage conditions, preserve production from pests and provide advantages to farmers for sale at the most convenient time, optimizing their income.
