On November 24 of last year, three breweries in Mar del Plata announced a new project.
In tune with the trends in the world of artisan production, they decided to sink barrels with
a production of 600 liters
into the sea
.
The objective, they explained, was for the aging process to take place under the pressure of water, at a
depth of
about
20 meters
.
The barrels were deposited in a cage, held on the deck of the fishing vessel "Kronomether", beached since 1991 and sunk three miles from the port of Mar del Plata for six years.
The initiative had an extra spice.
The proceeds from the sale of the beer would be
donated to the
"Lorenzo Scaglia"
Museum of Natural Sciences
in the seaside resort.
The project suffered a severe blow in the last hours.
Carlos Brelles, a member of the NGO Thalassa Buceo and who was in the operation of submerging the cages where the beer barrels were, denounced the fact on his wall of the social network Facebook.
"We will hardly get out of the crisis in which we are immersed if we continue to consider the VILLAINS ALIVE. A thief is not a living person, he is a thief.
And there were two or three of those alive who in this last month took the trouble to navigate until a sunken ship and, after diving to a depth of 20 meters, they stole barrels where beer was being macerated, "
Brelles said on his social network.
The production had been made by the
Heller, La Paloma and Baum
breweries
.
The operation to submerge the barrels was carried out by members of a diving school in Mar del Plata, Prefecture and a towing company who collaborated with the solidarity purpose.
All of them had planned to participate at the end of this month in the work to rescue the beer from the sunken ship and continue with the brewing process.
But when the divers arrived at the site, they discovered that the barrels were gone.
They had been stolen.
"
The dreams of macerating beer at the bottom of the sea are
gone. They did not steal barrels, they stole the hope of businessmen and wage earners who did not have a very good year,"
said Brelles.
And he added:
"They stole the possibility of raising funds that would be destined to buy instruments for the Museum of Natural Sciences of Mar del Plata, as well as stolen the hope of university students who had placed panels for the study of marine communities, and of that way to learn more about our fauna
.
"
The entrepreneurs who promoted the project are surprised.
“
You cannot take that drink directly from the barrels
.
You have to mix it with another that we have in tanks here on land, gasify it, and so on.
The barrels were not stolen from there, but they did want to extract them from the water, thinking they were something else and then they let them loose and then the tide took them away, ”explained Juan Pablo Vincent, owner of Baum, in dialogue with
La Capital
.
