No, David Frick from the Irsee monastery brewery in the Allgäu did not have the heart.

But because the best-before date of around 2500 liters of draft beer, which could not be sold because of the closed catering, expired last Sunday, the brewery launched a spontaneous campaign.

The news quickly spread throughout the village, and so people stood in line for up to two hours on Sunday morning - well-behaved with mask and distance - to have the beer filled into cans, mugs or bottles.

It was the last keg filling before the lockdown that Frick brought to the people at the last minute - albeit without any income.

Currently, his brewery employees only fill bottles, the hotel and inn belonging to the monastery brewery are at a standstill.

“We need a perspective,” says the managing director.

All employees, the majority of whom are on short-time work, are waiting for a signal.

Many of his professional colleagues feel the same way.

That is why a group of brewers from all over Bavaria and their association representatives met with Minister of Economics Hubert Aiwanger (FW) in his ministry for the beer summit yesterday.

Aiwanger agreed to support the industry.

The diversity of Bavarian beer culture is at stake, he said after the meeting.

"You almost get the impression that they want to give Bayern something on their hats because this problem doesn't exist to the same extent in the north," he said.

Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) should finally adjust the aid and not further exclude the Bavarian brewery restaurants.

Brewery inns criticize, for example, that - in contrast to the baker with a café - they are not entitled to state corona aid.

Aiwanger also demanded that draft beer that cannot be sold due to the lockdown be classified as perishable and reimbursed as fixed costs under Bridging Aid III.

This would bail out the brewers.

He also renewed his demand for an opening perspective for gastronomy towards Easter.

Since many of Aiwanger's demands are directed at the federal government, Lothar Ebbertz from the Bavarian Brewers' Association suggested that Bavaria should help itself if nothing happened in the federal government.

Aiwanger replied: "If we wave too quickly with the Bavarian millions, the federal government says: Everything is fine."

Alois Unertl, wheat beer brewer from Haag (not to be confused with the brewery of the same name and soon to be closed in Mühldorf) was also present at the meeting.

He says the brewers' problems have reached the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Alois Unertl is currently processing his unsold barrels into beer brandy (we reported).

But the next bad news recently came from South Tyrol.

From there, too, 120 unsold barrels come back from the winter sports region.

"Now we are waiting for signals as to when we can finally brew for gastronomy again."
